FAQs
Composite Decking Questions, Answered
The things people most often ask us before booking composite decking work. If your question isn’t here, give Rob a call — the advice is free.
Is composite decking worth the extra cost?
Composite costs more to buy than timber, but you save on the upkeep. There is no sanding, staining or oiling, and the boards will not rot, splinter or warp. Many manufacturers also back their boards with long product guarantees, separate from our own 12-month workmanship warranty. If you want a deck you can simply use, rather than maintain, it usually pays for itself over the years.
Does composite decking get hot in the sun?
It can. Composite boards, especially darker colours, get warmer in strong direct sun than timber does. If your deck faces south and you will be walking on it barefoot, a lighter grey or natural tone stays noticeably cooler. It is worth comparing colours in person before you decide.
Is composite decking slippery when wet?
Good quality capped composite boards have a textured, wood-grain surface that gives better grip than smooth or weathered timber, and they do not grow the green film timber does as readily. They are not completely slip-proof, so an occasional clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush keeps them at their best.
Does composite decking fade?
Modern capped composite boards have a protective outer shell that resists fading and staining far better than older, uncapped boards did. Expect a slight, even mellowing of the colour in the first few months as the boards settle in, after which they hold their colour well. How much depends on the brand and range you choose.
Can composite boards go on a timber frame?
Many composite boards can be fitted to a treated timber frame, but the joists need to be spaced more closely than for timber decking, and fixed with the manufacturer’s clips and fixings to keep the warranty valid. The frame is what keeps the deck level for years to come, so we build it to the board manufacturer’s specification rather than cutting corners underneath.
