FAQs
Wooden Decking Questions, Answered
The things people most often ask us before booking wooden decking work. If your question isn’t here, give Rob a call — the advice is free.
How long does a wooden deck last?
A well-built deck in pressure-treated timber will typically last 10 to 15 years or more. How long it lasts comes down to two things: a solid frame with air moving underneath it, so the timber can dry out, and regular upkeep of the boards. A neglected deck will wear out much sooner than one that is cleaned and treated.
What maintenance does wooden decking need?
Sweep it regularly so leaves and dirt do not sit in the gaps between boards. Give it a proper scrub with a decking cleaner once a year, ideally in spring, then re-apply a decking oil, stain or preservative every year or two. Keep an eye on shaded areas, as that is where moss and algae build up first.
Is wooden decking slippery?
Any timber can get slippery when it is wet and has a green film on it, especially in shady, damp corners. Keeping the boards clean is the single biggest help. For steps, or a deck that sits in shade most of the day, anti-slip boards with grip strips set into the surface are worth considering, and we can price those for you.
Is wooden decking cheaper than composite?
Yes, a timber deck usually costs noticeably less to build than the same deck in composite, which makes it a popular choice for larger areas. The trade-off is ongoing upkeep: timber needs cleaning and re-treating every year or two, where composite does not. We are happy to quote for both so you can weigh it up.
Can I stain or paint my new deck a different colour?
Yes. New pressure-treated timber is often damp from treatment, so it is best to let it weather for a few months before staining, so the finish soaks in properly rather than sitting on the surface. Choose a product made for decking, as ordinary fence paint or exterior paint will wear and peel underfoot.
